Mogake Yakishime Tokoname Senchawan - Japanese Teacup
This elegant Tokoname-yaki senchawan (sencha cup) is made with yakishime clay and is fired in the tanka style. The cup is decorated with an intricate web of fine mogake (藻掛 - seaweed wrapping) patterns. As the name suggests, this traditional Tokoname technique that dates back to the Edo period is achieved by wrapping each piece with amamo seaweed before firing. In the kiln, the seaweed burns off, leaving its carbonised silhouette draped across the piece. With a classic tulip shape and a modest 40ml capacity, this cup is ideal for savouring high-grade sencha, though can be used for any purpose. This piece was made by Tanikawa Jin.
